Word for word
In 1986, a drought exposed something buried in the mud of the Sea of Galilee.
Scripture: He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
Luke sets a scene beside the lake of Gennesaret, with fishermen, nets and boats. His account mentions two boats at the shore.
Archaeologists, Kibbutz Ginosar and volunteers dug it out before the water rose again. Rumour said it held gold, so it was guarded day and night.
The old wood was fragile in open air. So the boat was wrapped in fibreglass and insulating foam, floated to its new location, and kept in a wax bath for twelve years.
What survives is twenty-seven feet, or 8.2 metres, long, and 7.5 feet wide, preserved to a height of 4.3 feet.
Mostly cedar planks, joined by pegged slot-and-tab joints called mortise and tenon, plus nails. Flat-bottomed, it could get very close to shore. But ten kinds of wood suggest a shortage, or scrap wood and repeated repairs.
Radiocarbon dating gives forty BC, give or take eighty years. Pottery, nails and hull construction suggest fifty BC to fifty AD. Repairs show it served for decades, perhaps nearly a century.
How does it relate to Luke chapter five? It shows the kind of working fishing boat used on this lake in that period. That illustrates the setting; it does not confirm that particular scene.
Other than the dating, there is no evidence connecting this boat to Jesus or his disciples. Many Christians value it as the sort of boat they used, but the name Jesus Boat is a label, not a finding.
Today the boat is displayed at the Yigal Allon Galilee Boat Museum in Kibbutz Ginosar. A replica sits beside Lednica lake in Poland.
