Questions to talk about
Word for word
Mark: Let me say this as plainly as I can: if you're tired of being handed checklists for God, this is for you. What do I actually have to do?
Sarah: I wondered the same thing for years, and I love that you're asking. In Acts 16, a man asks almost those exact words. Here's what he was told.
Scripture: brought them out, and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Mark: That's it? Honestly, that's shorter than I expected. But why was he asking in the first place? He sounds like a man who was shaken.
Sarah: No. An earthquake had just thrown every prison door open and loosened everyone's chains. The jailer was roused from sleep, saw the open doors, supposed the prisoners had escaped, and drew his sword, about to kill himself.
Mark: Wow. That's heavy. So what happened next?
Sarah: Paul shouted that nobody had gone anywhere, they were all still there. The jailer called for lights, rushed in, and fell down shaking in front of Paul and Silas.
Mark: Okay, but just believe? That feels too easy to me. Isn't there a part where I fix my life first, earn it somehow?
Sarah: I felt that too. I've fallen short, and I still do. Elsewhere, Ephesians 2:8-9 says salvation is by grace through faith, a gift of God, not by works.
Mark: And did it change anything for the jailer? Or were those just words said in the middle of a scary night?
Sarah: That same hour he washed their wounds, and he and his whole household were baptized. He set a meal in front of them, and the passage says he rejoiced greatly.
Mark: What if I'm just not sure I believe yet? Is there still room for me in all this?
Sarah: I can't say for sure what that looks like, but the jailer's story shows someone who asked the question out loud. You can ask too: talk to God honestly, or reach out to me or a Christian friend.
Sarah: Here's one thing to carry today: the jailer asked his question, and the first answer he got was short and clear. Follow along for more gentle talks like this.
