Questions to talk about
Word for word
Mark: I always figured you'd need somebody holier than me to carry my prayers up. Is that how this works?
Sarah: A lot of people wonder that, and I used to. Tradition says Paul wrote about it to Timothy, so let's look at 1 Timothy 2:5-6 together.
Scripture: For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all; the testimony in its own times;
Mark: Okay, but who's Paul, and why's he writing to Timothy? It feels a bit like reading someone else's mail.
Sarah: It's a letter traditionally attributed to Paul, to his younger colleague Timothy, who was serving in Ephesus. Just before this, the letter says to pray for everyone, and that God desires all people to be saved.
Mark: Okay, so what's it actually saying? I'm honestly not sure I'm good enough to start.
Sarah: Jesus is the one mediator between God and people, the man Christ Jesus. Think of it like a bridge. He gave himself as a ransom for all. It's not about being good enough; I need his grace too, and I'm trusting Jesus.
Mark: Wait, didn't it say God wants people to come to full knowledge of the truth? So maybe I could just say, "God, I want to know you"?
Sarah: Honest words are a fair place to begin. I love you, friend, and I want you there with me. You're welcome to follow along as we keep asking these questions.
