Does God Still Want Me Back?
Luke 19:10
Scripture
“For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 10:45, World English Bible
Questions to talk about
Word for word
Mark: Hey, I'm asking this one with you in mind, because I care about you. Why did Jesus come into the world at all?
Sarah: I think he answered that himself. The ten were indignant at James and John, so Jesus called them over and talked about being a servant, and why he came. Listen.
Scripture: For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Mark: Huh. That's not what I expected the Son of Man to say about himself. Where did that come from?
Sarah: Right before it, he told them rulers throw their weight around, but it wouldn't be that way with them. Then he pointed to his own coming as one who serves.
Mark: Okay, but that last word, ransom. That's the one that confuses me. What does it mean here? The passage doesn't spell it out.
Sarah: I don't have every answer, but GotQuestions says Jesus gave his life to redeem us from sin and deliver us from its consequences. Ransom seems to point to that, and I believe it includes me.
Mark: So do I have to be good enough to deserve that? Because I'm not sure I'm anywhere close.
Sarah: No, that's the whole point. According to GotQuestions, salvation can't be earned. It comes by grace through faith in Jesus' death and resurrection, not by being good enough.
Mark: Does the story just stop there? It feels like it needs an example.
Sarah: Next in Mark, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus cried out for mercy. Many told him to hush, but Jesus stood still and said, Call him.
Mark: So he stopped for the one many wanted quiet. That's not the God I pictured.
Sarah: He came for many, and I hope that includes you. I'd be so glad if you got to know him. Try telling God, I want to know you. My door's open too.
