Scripture
“This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
John 6:40, World English Bible
Questions to talk about
Word for word
Mark: Okay, honest question. What does God actually want from me? I always pictured a giant to-do list that I'd already failed.
Sarah: I've pictured that list too. But in John 6, Jesus tells people who had seen him and still didn't believe what the Father's will is. Listen.
Scripture: This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
Mark: Huh. That sounds more like a promise than a list. But why was he saying this to a crowd? Were they all on board?
Sarah: Not really. Jesus told them they'd seen him and still didn't believe. The Jews grumbled about his claim of coming from heaven: isn't this Joseph's son? We know his parents.
Mark: So he's talking to people who didn't believe in him. Honestly, that sounds a lot like me.
Sarah: It sounds like me too, once. And right before this, he says he will in no way throw out anyone who comes to him.
Mark: But what about my past? Doesn't he want me cleaned up before I show up?
Sarah: Jesus says he will in no way throw out anyone who comes to him. I'm still a mess in plenty of ways, and I'm only here by grace.
Mark: Okay, so what actually makes the difference, then?
Sarah: Jesus died for our sins and rose again. We trust him; Ephesians 2:8-9 says it's by grace through faith, not works.
Mark: Okay, but how do I even start trusting someone when I'm not sure I'm there yet?
Sarah: Jesus says no one can come unless the Father draws them, so maybe that pull you feel is that, though the passage doesn't say how it feels. Just talk to God honestly.
Sarah: Cru says God is concerned with the attitude of your heart more than your words. I love you, and I'd love for you to know the eternal life Jesus promises. Bring your questions to God today, and if you ever want to talk, my door's open.
